Students Enlightened on Beauty out of Waste at a Waste Management site visit

QUICK BITE - The purpose of the visit was to enlighten students about waste management. Mr Balaji Kendre, Project Manager of the plant, briefed the students about the working of the plant.

Each field visit enhances the critical thinking skills of students and gives them a chance to see things from a different perspective, consequently on March 31, 2022, the students of FY BSW & SY BBA of Don Bosco College, Panjim, visited Swachta Kendra: Material Recovery Facility, under the Dry Waste Management Project, CCP in St. Inez. The visit was organised by Assistant Professor Glenda Mascarenhas.

The purpose of the visit was to enlighten students about waste management. Mr Balaji Kendre, Project Manager of the plant, briefed the students about the working of the plant. He spoke about the imported machinery and the collaborative efforts of the United Nations Development Programme. Mr Kendre illuminated about the segregation of different kinds of waste such as plastic, medical waste, E-waste, etc. The students were then introduced to the staff and were left with the message that one person’s garbage ends up being someone else’s responsibility. The highlight of the visit was the emphasis of the beauty that can come out of the waste. The students also learnt that waste ends up being more valuable after segregation than when it is in the actual packaging form.

The students put forth their queries about garbage segregation, restaurant waste management and how start-ups can help aid the waste management issue. The student of SYBBA, Ms Nida Shaikh proposed the vote of thanks and appreciated the project manager for the good works carried out and for enlightening the gathering with the eye-opening session. Ms Garima Tiwari of FY BSW felt that she too can now convert the waste that is in her home into a thing of beauty.
The visit left the students pondering upon how the community’s waste is the bread and butter of workers and how they can increase awareness in the communities to segregate the waste at home to make the work easy for the workers at the plant.
