Cinemania: Phase Four – A Filmy Showdown at DBC

Don Bosco College’s Department of Mass Communication & Journalism, along with its Film Club ‘Cinemaniacs’, organized the 4th edition of its two-day filmy extravaganza Cinemania: Phase Four on the 9th and 10th of October 2025. The event featured an interdepartmental competition on Day 1 for Don Bosco College students and an intercollegiate showdown on Day 2, with ten colleges across Goa participating.
Day One began with the traditional lighting of the lamp by Chief Guest Mr. Sachin Chatte, veteran film critic; College Director Rev. Fr. Kinley D’Cruz; Principal Dr. Cedric Silveira; and Faculty In-Charge Asst. Prof. Agnelo D’Souza, joined by student coordinators Stella Lopes, Herman Noronha, Siddharth Kittur, and Aakanksha Bakhale. In his address, Mr. Chatte spoke about cinema’s power to educate, entertain, and inspire new voices in storytelling, reminding the audience that films should always have the power to move people.

Organized primarily by the Cinemaniacs, Day One featured departments competing in events that explored diverse aspects of filmmaking and film appreciation. These included Lord of the Frames (Poster Designing & Mascot Presentation), What If? (Acting with a Twist), Genres of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Costume Showdown based on Film Genres), and the popular Any Dept Can Dance 2, a group dance competition where teachers joined their students on stage. Off-stage events included Blockbuster Quiz, The Great Debaters, Final Cut (Trailer Editing), and the crowd favorite – Teachers’ Quiz.
At the end of Day One, Team I.T. – the Department of Mass Communication & Journalism – retained their title as Overall Champions, with the Department of Computer Applications finishing as Runners-up after a closely fought contest among six departments. The day concluded with the Club Secretary and Event Head Ms. Stella Lopes delivering the vote of thanks and giving the audience a glimpse of what awaited them on Day Two – the intercollegiate edition.

The excitement continued on Day Two as ten colleges from across Goa competed in a fierce cinematic face-off. The day opened with a red-carpet inauguration, graced by Chief Guest Mr. Christ Silva, award-winning filmmaker of Connection and Crazy Mogi, who encouraged students to tell stories rooted in their culture while experimenting with cinematic form. Rev. Fr. Kinley D’Cruz, the College Director, spoke about cinema’s role in shaping culture and congratulated the organizing team for mounting an event of such magnitude. This was followed by the lighting of the lamp and the ceremonial clap officially declaring Cinemania: Phase Four open.
Teams then took the stage, each representing a renowned film director and embodying their unique style through performances. Events included Action Replayy (Ice-Breaker Video), MisMatched 3.0 (Acting Event featuring Crossovers), and Flopbuster, where teams defended critically flopped films assigned to them. Off-stage events such as Blockbuster Quiz, Poster No. 1 (Poster Editing), and Absolute Cinema (Five-hour Filmmaking Challenge) showcased participants’ creative and technical skills.

The second half of the day featured a group dance competition inspired by the styles of famous dance icons and a thrilling dance-off in Let’s Nach-O!. The highlight was The Greatest Showman – the Costume Showdown themed around iconic film directors. Mr. Swayam Padwal and Ms. Suhani Naik from Dhempe College, Miramar, were crowned Mr. and Ms. Cinemania for their performances as Chota Pandit and Monjolika, respectively.

The event concluded with Faculty In-Charge Asst. Prof. Agnelo D’Souza expressing gratitude to the management, sponsors, faculty, and student volunteers who made Cinemania: Phase Four a blockbuster success. Team Priyadarshan from Dhempe College, Miramar, emerged as Champions, while Team Christopher Nolan from Rosary College of Commerce and Arts finished as Runners-up.
The two-day spectacle ended on an electrifying note, with applause and celebration filling the hall. Cinemania: Phase Four left behind memories of creativity, collaboration, and a shared passion for cinema.
