Electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the country. Major recycling of e-waste is carried out in the non-formal sector using primitive and hazardous methods. Adequate legislative measures and cost-effective, environmental friendly, technological solution would be needed to address the issue. To highlight the importance of the same, the Ecotiva club organised a session/ awareness program on ‘Sustainable management of E waste: Technology can be recycled too' to commemorate the International E-waste Day on October 14th, 2021. The speaker for the session was Mr Sushant Figueiredo who represented ‘Karo Sambhav' and delivered a session on co-creating sustainable solutions for waste management. Mr. Sushant is an Environmental consultant with expertise in e-waste, Biomedical waste and plastic waste management. He introduced the different elements that are categorised as e-waste and its toxic nature.

Mr. Sushant illustrated the medals made up of e-waste for the recent Tokyo Olympics and gave an insight into how this waste can be recycled to make more magical products. He said the most imperative method is disposal at correct points, segregation and treating it. As India is the third largest generator of e-waste, he insisted on sustainable methods to be followed. He pointed out the problems faced by people working at different sites and their exposure to the harmful toxic elements. Mr. Sushant suggested sustainable measures like disposing the e-waste, giving it to the right source with well defined legal methods and documentations, having Ewaste drives, segregation methods.

He had a very interactive session with the students which helped them know about the proper disposal method. This awareness program was well attended by students from different streams, the principal of the institution, Dr. Cedric Silveira, as well as various staff members and was organised under the guidance of Ms. Glenda Mascarenhas, Faculty incharge of the Ecotiva club.
